when she died
the sky was blue
in mars

under the sun
squirrels ran
after another winter

the two of us knew her verdict
"won't get to Christmas"

we also knew that she would die
alone
with all her family around

when she died
I baulked
as a wild horse
refusing reins

the sun and I hung in her direction
warming her to stay

behold
her yellowish grey body
regurgitated our hope

the invisible conductor that inhabits us
had paralysed her dance
in that air
that has gone in

she disappeared like a perfume
leaving
the
bottle
an empty
body
for the eyes.
